At the age of 16, Mike Roberts was the undisputed North Wales Junior Tennis Champion during which he has subsequently described as ‘happy days’.
In that era, he played against tennis stars like Mark Cox, long time former British no.1 who went on in tennis history as the first amateur player to beat a professional. “When I first came to Shropshire, I played at High Ercall in the late 1960’s,” he recalled.
Mike, now 79, who was born in North Wales, is Shrewsbury Severn Rotary Club’s latest recruit. He has joined from Shrewsbury Darwin where he spent a year. In total, he has been a Rotarian for approximately eight years and described Rotary as a ‘great movement’.
He is a former chairman of Shropshire Scouts, describing himself as a ‘very keen Scouter,’ when he previously lived in Shrewsbury, and then when his wife died he moved back to be with his son two years ago. He has three grandsons and a grand-daughter.
Members will also be interested to hear that in his professional career he was a chartered loss adjuster in the UK from 1968 to when he retired in 2017.
He is delighted to have joined Shrewsbury Severn Rotary Club and looks forward to attending many more meetings in the future.
