A BEARD SHAVE RAISES £1,000 FOR CANCER CHARITY

Rotarians have been told how a cancer charity is going from strength to strength.

Karen Roberts, fundraising and volunteer co-ordinator for the Lingen Davies Cancer Fund, was speaking to members of Shrewsbury Severn Rotary Club which has raised £1,000 for the charity. The donation was the result of a beard shave by Rotarian Peter Love, one of the club’s Santa’s who regularly grows his whiskers specially for the role.

In thanking the club for their support, Karen said the gift would help towards the purchase of new equipment with a major announcement due to be made shortly. She told how the Lingen Davies Cancer Fund, founded by Bernard Lingen and Frank Davies in 1979, had grown and gone from strength to strength, culminating in a sapphire celebration planned for June 5. The charity is set to launch its Horticultural Therapy pilot project at the Men’s Sheds on the West Mid Showground. Twelve people will be supported by Alexis Stone from Bloomin Lovely and the charity will look to continue this if it proves a success.

Fifty thermometers have been purchased and labelled ‘Funded by Shrewsbury Committee Lingen Davies’ and the funding of wig vouchers for chemotherapy patients is underway. A knee support block for radiotherapy is now in use and a grossing station for pathology has been ordered. This will allow the pathology team to process samples more quickly. Urology patients in clinic 12 have been given a water cooler so they can readily access fresh water.

Karen added that the charity now had over 90 volunteers on their records.
